Tunes while you Train!

February 6th, 2007

John Rankin had a great post about what he listens to while he runs…  and it got me thinking.

I love music! In fact, I used to own an independent record label here in Seattle years ago, back before we were calling slowed down punk rock in a minor key “grunge”. Now days, I just listen to music. I love to listen to music while I run or ride… I wish I could listen while I swim… I’ve seen some underwater ipod contraptions but they freak me out.

My ipod’s been acting funny lately, I think it’s going to die soon. It seems to only last about 20minutes, even with a full charge. I will probably by some stereo headphones for my Blackberry Pearl soon so I can switch to using that as my “convergence” device.

Anyway I have about 5,000 songs on my ipod, and I leave it in shuffle repeat all mode all the time. So basically I will get a different random selection of music every time I’m out. My collection is kinda mixed up with rock, punk, country, hip-hop/rap, ska, rock-a-billy, metal, jazz, big band, strange stuff…

In the spirit of a ride, here’s what the next 30 songs on my ipod would be…

“Toxic Toast” - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
“Fast” - L7 (transferred from the original 7″Sub Pop Single #105 )
“A B*tch is a B*tch” - N.W.A.
“Rain” - The Cult
“Needle & Thread” - Lit
“Scoff” - Nirvana
“Hangin’ Tree” - Green River (from the Sub Pop 200 Compilation)
“Diggin’ Your Scene” - Smash Mouth
“No Big Thing” - Lit
“Heaven Tonight” - Hole
“1-2-8″ - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
“Stumped” - Minor Threat
“Hot Dog” - Limp Bizkit
“Take Control” - Weezer
“Porch” - Pearl Jam
“It’s So Easy” - Guns N’ Roses
“Lie” - Fitz of Depression
“Blister 2000″ - Violent Femmes
“So What’cha Want” - The Beastie Boys
“Too Long” - Firehose
“Boring” - Blink 182
“If You Have To Ask” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Got the Life” - Korn
“American Gigolo” - Weezer
“Jack Ruby” - Camper Van Beathoven
“Walking The Cow” - Firehose
“Tremor Christ” - Pearl Jam
“Heater Moves and Eyes” - The Melvins
“Polly” - Nirvana
“Epoxy, For Example” - Firehose

It’s interesting that Firehose ended up there 3 times, since I haven’t heard them in a long while. Didn’t get any Rage Against The Machine which has been showing up a lot lately in the random mix for some reason. I’d probably say this was an “ok” mix, and I would have been most happy hearing the Weezer and the Fitz of Depression that some how squeaked their way in there.

Tell us, what’s on your ipod today?

I have a play list that is ‘exercise’ music. I have a lot of mellow music and some yoga instructional as well as books on tape… it would throw me off it that popped up in the fully random mix. So I put a bunch of upbeat favorites into my exercise playlist. I have been thinking about being even more intentional and making a cardio mix that starts with a warm up level song and get progressively faster and upbeat and then ends with a cool down song. With the play list being a set 30 mins. haven’t done it yet…

my pneumonia is back so I am home again holding down the couch with charger. I have only made it to the gym once (last friday) since that iron yoga day with you… my body just can’t handle exercising when I am this sick.

How sick do you have to get before you take time off from working out? What kind of exercise do you do when you are feeling yucky? Have you found yourself significantly less prone to colds/flu since you have been all ironman?

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon.

Exercise and being sick is an interesting subject. I usually go ahead and “power through” training while I’m feeling sick, usually, that makes me feel better, but sometimes it has made me feel worse. I think it’s one of those things, where you have to know your body and really LISTEN to what it’s trying to tell you. I’m not always good at that.

Interestingly, I haven’t thought about whether or not I’ve been sick since my Ironman… when I think back, it seems like no, I haven’t been sick. Every once in a while I might get some congestion, but I haven’t been really sick in the past year… Maybe it’s because of my fitness level. I don’t know.

There is definitely a lot of research that would suggest that serious endurance training will lower your immune system, so it is counter-intuitive that I would be less sick. However, you have to compare that to what baseline? As you know being overweight will also run you down and tax your systems… so like anything in life there is some balance between no exercise and too much exercise that you have to find. Once you find what’s right for your body, then I think you are much less likely to get sick. At least that’s what I think.

But I still work in a germ factory…
